
Dr. Kevin P. Smidt, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in adult hip and knee reconstruction, primary and revision joint replacement, and minimally invasive joint preservation techniques. He treats a wide range of conditions affecting the hip and knee, including osteoarthritis, degenerative joint disease, hip arthritis, avascular necrosis (osteonecrosis), inflammatory arthritis, chronic hip and knee pain, and periprosthetic fractures.
His surgical expertise includes total hip replacement, anterior approach hip replacement, same-day outpatient hip replacement, revision hip surgery, total knee replacement, partial knee replacement (unicompartmental knee arthroplasty), revision knee replacement, computer-assisted joint replacement, and image-guided joint injections. Dr. Smidt also specializes in muscle-sparing surgical techniques, rapid recovery protocols, and opioid-sparing approaches designed to help patients recover safely and return to their daily activities as quickly as possible. In addition to elective joint reconstruction, he provides orthopaedic trauma care at multiple hospitals in the Columbus area.
Dr. Smidt earned his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University, where he competed as a Division I Scholar-Athlete, before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at LSU Health, where he was recognized with numerous honors, including the Chairman's Award for the highest Orthopaedic In-Training Examination score, Most Outstanding Resident, AAOS Resident of the Month, and the Dr. David and Sharon Waddell Award for Orthopaedic Resident Excellence.
While at LSU Health, Dr. Smidt served on the multidisciplinary orthopaedic oncology tumor board and founded the LSU Health Joints Camp, a comprehensive preoperative education program that prepares patients for total joint replacement surgery. He later completed advanced fellowship training in Adult Reconstruction at Baptist Health South Florida, focusing on complex hip and knee replacement and revision surgery.
Dr. Smidt remains actively involved in advancing the field of joint replacement through research and education. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). He also serves as a peer reviewer for The Journal of Arthroplasty, has presented research at national orthopaedic meetings, and has contributed chapters to leading orthopaedic textbooks.
